What is the Used Car Price Calculator?

This calculator gives you a realistic price range for a used car, for both buyers and sellers. You pick the make, model, trim and year, then add the mileage, ownership history, condition, location and any damage. You get a low and high figure and a most likely value, in the currency of your region.

How We Calculate it

We start with a typical new price for the exact trim and take off value for age. A car loses the most in its first year, and the rate then slows, with premium brands losing value faster than brands known for holding their price. After that, each factor adjusts the value in turn:

• Mileage: compared with about 20,000 km per year of age. Every 10,000 km above that moves the price down by roughly 1.2%, and every 10,000 km below moves it up.
• Ownership and condition: a first owner adds about 6% and a third owner or more takes off about 7%. Condition ranges from about +12% for excellent to about -32% for poor.
• Region: each market has its own price level and currency.
• Extras: fuel type, gearbox, color, accident history and service history each make a small change.

Damage is applied last. Body, engine, transmission and interior each have a weight, with the engine counting most and the interior least, and the penalty grows faster as the damaged share goes up. The range around the midpoint is about 7% either side, and widens for older cars, damaged cars and unknown accident history.
